Pupil Premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.
In the 2016/17 financial year, schools receive funding for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years. Schools receive £1320 for pupils in Reception year to year 6.
Schools also receive £1900 for any pupil who has left local authority because of adoption, a special guardianship order, a child arrangement order or a residence order. If a pupil has been eligible for free school meals and has also left local authority care for the above reasons, schools receive £1900.
The government pays academies pupil premium in quarterly instalments based on the January census.
The Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) is additional funding for early years settings to improve the education they provide for disadvantaged 3 and 4 year-olds. Children must receive free early education in order to attract EYPP funding. The EYPP is additional funding is funded at the national rate of 53p per hour per eligible pupil. From September 2017 with the introduction of the Extended Free Entitlement offer giving working parents an additional 15 hours entitlement per week up to a maximum of 30 hours in total (term time only), Early Years Pupil Premium will only be paid to providers for the Universal 15 hours a child attends. Any additional hours claimed under the Extended entitlement will not attract Pupil Premium funding.
Objectives for Pupil Premium in this Academy
- The Pupil Premium will be used to provide additional educational support to improve the progress and to raise the standard of achievement for these pupils
- The funding will be used to narrow and close the gap between the achievement of these pupils and their peers.
- As far as its power allows, the academy will use the additional funding to address any underlying inequalities between eligible for Pupil Premium and others.
- We will ensure that the additional funding reaches the pupils that need it most and that it makes a significant impact on their education and lives.
- All our work through Pupil Premium will be aimed at accelerating progress moving pupils entitled to Pupil Premium funding to a least age related expectations.
Strategy for using the funding
The Academy will look carefully at the main barriers faced by eligible pupils and will decide to put in place provision strategies for best impact. Please see our current Pupil Premium Expenditure Initiatives to find out how we have chosen to spend the pupil premium funding to address the barriers and the reason for the approaches we have chosen. We anticipate these might be things like:
- Providing small group work with an experienced teacher focused on over coming gaps in learning to help them make improved progress and to raise their standards of achievement.
- 1:1 support where a need is identified e.g. reading, speech and language, and phonics.
- Additional teaching and learning opportunities provided through trained staff and external agencies to help them make improved progress and to raise their standard of achievement.
- Acquiring effective materials aimed at raising standards.

Pupil Premium Expenditure
Our initiatives are updated during the academic year as we analyse data, review strategies we are using for raising attainment and update the numbers of eligible pupils and amount of funding being received.
Evaluation of the Impact of the Funding
The Headteacher regularly monitors, evaluates and reviews the strategies we have put into place for Pupil Premium and reports to the governing body on progress and impact. The strategies we use are regularly reviewed throughout the academic year.
